Acupuncture Research
Acupuncture for anxiety and anxiety disorders--a systematic literature review.
Pilkington K, Kirkwood G, Rampes H, Cummings M, Richardson J.
Acupunct Med. 2007 Jun;25(1-2):1-10.
Source School of Integrated Health, University of Westminster, London, UK. [email protected]
Conclusions: Positive findings are reported for acupuncture in the treatment of generalised anxiety disorder or anxiety neurosis but there is currently insufficient research evidence for firm conclusions to be drawn. No trials of acupuncture for other anxiety disorders were located. There is some limited evidence in favour of auricular acupuncture in perioperative anxiety. Overall, the promising findings indicate that further research is warranted in the form of well designed, adequately powered studies.

Acupuncture for Chronic Pain Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis
Andrew J. Vickers, DPhil; Angel M. Cronin, MS; Alexandra C. Maschino, BS; George Lewith, MD; Hugh MacPherson, PhD; Nadine E. Foster, DPhil; Karen J. Sherman, PhD; Claudia M. Witt, MD; Klaus Linde, MD; for the Acupuncture Trialists' Collaboration
Arch Intern Med. 2012;172(19):1444-1453. doi:10.1001/archinternmed.2012.3654.
Conclusions Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain and is therefore a reasonable referral option. Significant differences between true and sham acupuncture indicate that acupuncture is more than a placebo. However, these differences are relatively modest, suggesting that factors in addition to the specific effects of needling are important contributors to the therapeutic effects of acupuncture.

New Research: Acupuncture is Better for Migraines Than Drugs
The migraine study measured outcomes six months after the acupuncture treatments had been completed. The humanitarian implications of these finding suggest that acupuncture may be the primary choice of care for the treatment of migraines given its ability to provide long lasting relief.

Acupuncture Holds Promise for Treating Inflammatory DiseaseNow new research documents a direct connection between the use of acupuncture and physical processes that could alleviate sepsis, a condition that often develops in hospital intensive care units, springs from infection and inflammation, and takes an estimated 250,000 lives in the United States every year.

Antidepressant Microbes In Soil: How Dirt Makes You Happy
"Mycobacterium vaccae is the substance under study and has, indeed, been found to mirror the effect on neurons that drugs like Prozac provide. The bacterium is found in soil and may stimulate serotonin production, which makes you relaxed and happier. Studies were conducted on cancer patients and they reported a better quality of life and less stress." Read more at: http://www.cornucopia.org/2014/08/antidepressant-microbes-soil-dirt-makes-happy |
Is meditation the push-up for the brain?
Study shows practice may have potential to change brain's physical structure By Mark Wheeler "Two years ago, researchers at UCLA found that specific regions in the brains of long-term meditators were larger adn had more gray matter than the brains of individuals in a control group. This suggested that meditation may indeed be good for all of us since, alas, our brains shrink naturally with age." http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/is-meditation-the-push-up-for-210549.aspx |
Taming the Monkey Mind—How Meditation Affects Your Health and Wellbeing
"In a series of papers, they walk us through the anti-inflammatory effects of this intervention. Genetic study2 of eight-week and long-term meditators demonstrated evidence of changes to gene expression – specifically antioxidant production, telomerase activity, and oxidative stress – as a result of the relaxation response."

Effects of Qigong on the Nervous System Bu Roger Jahnke, O.M.D
"There are a number of mechanisms associated with the brain, nervous system and other related systems that Qigong and Yoga/Pranayama practice enhance including:
- Initiation of the "relaxation response" (RR), parasympathetic aspect of the autonomic nervous system or resting aspect of the basic rest activity cycle (BRAC).
- Shift of the neurotransmitter profile.
- Dilation of blood capillaries initiating increased microcirculation in the periphery, brain and organs.
- Supports the brain/neurological aspects of immune function.
- Balance right/left brain hemisphere dominance.
- Induction of alpha, and sometimes theta wave forms in EEG
- Affecting neuroreflex mechanisms through the stimulation of acupuncture response point
- Generating an affect on the function of the hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, third ventricle complex within the brain http://www.feeltheqi.com/articles/rc-nervous_system.htm
